Unfortunately, this might not surprise you:  According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of Americans between the ages of 16 and 74 read BELOW the equivalent of a sixth-grade level.  So, more than half. (That doesn’t mean they didn’t finish school . . . most of them probably did.  Reading comprehension is a complex cognitive function that can deteriorate if you don’t read and exercise your brain regularly.)
