A new study published in the Trends In Cognitive Sciences journal reveals that “brain farts” are distinct mental states that should be taken seriously. A team of neuroscientists concluded that the brain shows reduced activity during “brain farts” (or “brain glitches”) and the brain may actually be taking mini-naps. Parts of the brain enter a sleep-like state while people are still awake during “brain farts.” The findings suggest that the brain can sometimes go partially “offline” without people realizing it.

Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Outkast, the White Stripes, Soundgarden and Cyndi Lauper will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this Fall. Warren Zevon and Salt-N-Pepa are receiving special awards for musical influence. Nominees that didn’t get in this year include Mariah Carey, Phish, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, the Black Crowes and Oasis.
