Lefty Teen’s Transplant Surgery Reversed So He Could Keep Playing Baseball

Sixteen-year-old Michigan baseball player Sam Heintz spent the summer on the diamond despite living with a rare kidney disease. Sam had a transplant at age eight, but instead of the usual placement on the right side, his mom, Alicia, asked doctors to put it on the left. Why? As a left-handed player, his right side is more exposed to hard hits from the ball and collisions on the field. By placing the kidney on the opposite side, Physician Assistant Cristina Brini and the surgical team made it safer for Sam to keep chasing his baseball dreams.
