The Emmys recently announced it was going to start giving out a Legacy Award. The goal is to honor TV shows or franchises that have had, quote, “a profound and lasting impact on audiences and remain relevant to society, culture and the industry.”

Nobody got more excited about it than Trekkies.  And it certainly seems logical that “Star Trek” would be a contender.  The only problem is, it’s not eligible.

Why?  Because in 2018, the Television Academy honored the “Trek” franchise with its Governor’s Award, which recognizes, quote, “an individual, company or organization that has made a profound, transformational, and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television.” As you can tell by that description, the Governor’s Award is rarely given to a show or a franchise.  It’s normally reserved for a person or a company. but it HAS happened.  And the Academy has decided the two awards are so similar, that “Star Trek” can’t win both. Only three other shows have won the Governor’s Award, and thus CAN’T win the Legacy Award.  They are:  “Masterpiece Theater”“Planet Earth”, and . . . “American Idol”.
