Four Fridays, Four Comedy Docs: Netflix’s October Treat

Netflix is making October a pretty funny month. They’re rolling out four comedy documentaries, one each week — starting with Who Is Martin Mull? on October 7th. Then on October 16th, it’s Norm Macdonald, with Judd Apatow’s Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, built from archival footage, photos and rare home videos. A week later, it’s Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story, also from Apatow. And they wrap things up October 30th with SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of.   The legendary Canadian sketch-comedy show that helped launch a ton of comedy stars like:  Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Rick Moranis and John Candy. So basically, if you like your documentaries funny, Netflix has your Friday nights covered all October. Check out the trailer for Netflix’s Norm Macdonald documentary, “Norm”.

With the number of movies Tom Cruise makes, he must read a ton of scripts, right?  Wrong. Turns out he doesn’t read ANY. He says, quote, “I have [directors and writers] read it to me . . . because I don’t want my ideas to invade it yet.” He adds, quote, “I’m a popcorn guy.  I’m a meat-and-potatoes popcorn [guy].  Is it moving me, or am I invested?  Am I not invested?  Where am I engaged?  Where am I not engaged? “That’s just who I am.”

The International Times says Prince William and Kate Middleton joined Tom Cruise Tuesday at the London premiere of his new film ”Digger”. Kate wore a plum-colored  gown.  It was William and Kate’s first movie premiere together since the 2022 UK premiere of ”Top Gun: Maverick.”

Judge Judy tells People magazine that she stopped watching her courtroom shows because she focused too much on her appearance instead of her decisions.  She initially watched Judge Judy after it debuted in 1996, but began criticizing  her face, neck, and camera angles. Judy is 83 and plans to retire from her current series, ”Judy Justice”, in October.

TMZ says Lionel Richie is back in the hospital after another heart issue. Richie is receiving treatment for an irregular heartbeat. Doctors are treating him with an AFib ablation. This is Richie’s third hospitalization in three months, following hospital visits in August and June. He has canceled three tour dates.

Radar Online says George Clooney has allegedly reduced his Hollywood social circle to focus more closely on his family and marriage.  A source tells the website, “Most people are blaming Amal because they’re still hosting plenty of people. They’re just more the crowd that she runs with versus celebrity types. Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Adam Sandler – there’s a long list of A-listers who regularly spent time at the villa over the years. But not so much anymore. Everyone knows he and Brad aren’t really chummy these days, except when they’re working together and need to promote something. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that he’s distanced himself from pretty well all of his old Hollywood crowd.”

Charlie Hunnam wants to make one thing clear: his new show with the cast of Sons of Anarchy is not Sons of Anarchy. Instead, the cast plays fictionalized versions of themselves at a fan convention, where they must band together to face “a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.” Hunnam hoped to keep the premise under wraps, but after news outlets caught wind of it, they had to announce the series. It will air on FX and Hulu, though no release date has been set.

News Flash:  Chris Rock isn’t as rich as you think.  In a new profile in “Variety“, he says, quote, “I’ve been lucky.  I’ve made some money.  I’m not swimming in it.  I’m not on jets all the time.  I don’t own a boat.” Chris also notes that he lost a good chunk of cash in his 2016 divorce . . . and he wouldn’t be upset if DreamWorks called him for “Madagascar 4”.

Kat Dennings is . . . let’s just say, WELL-CHESTED.  And the writers of “2 Broke Girls” probably had that in mind when they wrote a scene where Kat and her co-star Beth Behrs run around in just their bras. This was in either Season 1 or 2, and Kat didn’t necessarily have the stroke yet to make demands.  She and Beth were, quote, “young and very lucky to be on a show that was successful.” But she made one anyway.  She went to her boss and told him she wasn’t doing it.  When he tried to insist, she said, quote, “You don’t pay me enough for a bra scene.”  It ended up being removed. Kat says, quote, “Never underestimate yourself, is the moral of the story.  And they weren’t paying me enough, although I don’t think anyone could.” (Here’s video of Kat telling the story.)
