The technology of smoke detectors was invented by accident. In the 1930s, a Swiss physicist named Walter Jaeger was trying to develop a sensor for detecting poison gas. His device wasn’t registering gas at all, so out of frustration, he lit a cigarette. And the smoke moved the meter on his gadget.
