Man Held for Trial as State Alleges He is a Sexually Violent Person

An Eau Claire County man will stay in a secure facility until a trial can determine whether he is a sexually violent person.

State Attorney General JB Van Hollen announced Thursday that Eau Claire County Circuit Judge Jon Theisen found probable cause that 32-year-old Steven T. Trautt is a sexually violent person. He'll remain at the Sand Ridge secure treatment center until a jury trial is held on a petition from the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Trautt was convicted of Third Degree Sexual Assault in 2006 and spent 5 years in prison. He was released in 2011, but ordered to return to prison last year when his extended supervision was revoked. He was scheduled to be released August 5th, but the state filed a petition that alleges Trautt suffers from mental conditions that make it likely he will engage in future acts of sexual violence.
