Fire damaged a duplex on Union Street in Eau Claire early this morning.
The fire department says they were called to 521 Union Street around a quarter after 5. Firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from the porch area of the duplex. Occupants of the duplex tried to put the fire out themselves, but were not successful. They all made it out safely before fire crews arrived. Firefighters say they had trouble getting at the fire, because of several additions made to the home, which is nearly 120 years old. Firefighters were on the scene for over 4 hours, using ladders and saws to cut holes in the roof. Damage is estimated at 35,000 dollars. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
